Description ~ Short Row Wizardry

A practical look at short rows and their many applications to better tailor your knitting. Try unwrapped, wrapped, yarnover and Japanese short rows and compare their merits. Short rows in Garter stitch and making a mitered corner. Planning to improve fit and finish by planning your own shapings for bulgy bits. Conversion of door-step shoulder directions to short rows.

 

Garter stitch short rows to create the ultimate practical, comfortable, generic sock heel. Students will try ruffled edges, short-rows in the round and shape a sleeve head. Knit a circular disc by working only straight rows. Play with free style short rows, flat and three dimensional.


Materials Needed ~ Short Row Wizardry

20g Light colored Worsted weight yarn or thicker (giving a gauge of 4 - 5 st per inch) in two colors (your class working yarn may be variegated if desired).  At least two sets of 5 appropriately sized dpns, 4.5 - 5 mm/US# 7 - 8.


Usual knitting paraphernalia.  Scraps of yarn for markers or coil-less pins or safety pins.


Homework ~ Short Row Wizardry

Using Worsted weight yarn or thicker (giving a gauge of 4 - 5 st per inch) in a solid light colour, and appropriately sized dpns, 4.5 - 5 mm/US 7 - 8. Cut off yarn from each swatch, leave stitches on a spare dp needle (ideally) or holder.

 

Swatches 1, 2, 3 and 5 - Cast on 20 sts. Knit 4 rows (Garter stitch), then knit 1 row, purl 1 row (Stocking stitch).

 

Swatch 4 - Cast on 34 sts. Knit 4 rows (Garter stitch), then knit 1 row, purl 1 row (Stocking stitch).

 

Swatch 5 - Cast on 24 sts. Knit 4 rows (Garter stitch), then knit 1 row, purl 1 row (Stocking stitch).
 

Swatch 6 - Cast on 32 sts. Knit 6 rounds circularly (Stocking stitch).
 

Swatch 7 - Cast on 12 sts. Work four rows of Stocking stitch(Knit one row, purl one row x 2).
